Rising Tide of Sexual Violence in India

Silent Cries: The Alarming Surge in Sexual Violence in India and the Government’s Unheard Response.

On independence day, PM Modi addressed the nation highlighting the reforms his government has implemented to help and protect women. It was just 6 days after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. Another six minors were raped in less than a week after PM’s address. Watch the below video to see the details.

Rape and sexual abuse of minors in India are escalating daily. Girl students are being molested by their teachers. The union government did little to address this issue, and many BJP leaders were involved in such heinous crimes against women. Haridwar BJP leader Vinod Arya’s son Pulkit, former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan are few of them.

The Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women said that the Modi government spent a whopping 80% of funds under its flagship Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme on media campaigns. PM Modi should take responsibility for his government’s failure and should consider resigning.

I joined a company by name Dreamport in last December. Like me, many joined this company because they offered a salary of $1000 to $1500 for selling air tickets remotely from the comfort of home. Meet Miss Iowa in the below video. Her fake name and accent were designed to deceive countless Indians.

They have no office in India, they are not registered in India and none of them will ever use their real name. Even the trainers from India will say that they are based in UK or Europe. Someone from Europe, or USA or some other nation will take few hours of training every week. Some manager will attend the meeting. They will ask questions like: who wants to earn $1000 from first month?

Some of us earned between ₹2000 to ₹30,000 in two months. Many didn’t earn even a rupee after spending 8 hours a day for two months. But they were worried about getting fired for not making sales.

All trainees were experienced and were not freshers from college. Yet, no one blamed that the company made them work for two months without pay. This is because they created a mental picture of earning $1000 to $1500 a month sitting at home.

The company was engaged in fraudulent unethical business practice. They have tried this trick in several other countries from where they cannot get employees any more and India is no different.

The five paragraphs above are intended to illustrate how our mindsets can be conditioned to act contrary to our usual behaviour. There’s also a psychological factor called “guilty pleasure,” which can make things more intriguing than usual.

An example of “guilty pleasure” could be the thrill some people feel when stealing an inexpensive items that they don’t really need like a spoon from a restaurant they visit.

The above said conditioning and “guilty pleasure” could be one of the reason for increased number of rapes in India. If you readers are not used to visiting porn websites, then please consider visiting few of them to see if my finding makes sense for you.

You’ll often see video titles such as ‘fuck high school girl in her uniform’, ‘fuck cheating wife at Cheap Hotels’, ‘Stepsister fucked in bus stand’, ‘My friend’s daughter loves my hard cock’, etc. You will come across similar skits and titles even in porn videos that are in Hindi. Such titles and skits are feed for creating perverts in society.

A video title like, “Me and my sweetheart in “Aman Venice” or a title like “Our honeymoon in Santorini Secret Suites & Spa” may not be as exciting as the one that you read in the previous paragraph. Because it lacks the element called ‘guilty pleasure’ which people enjoy more than the actual sexual pleasure.

In sex, the element called the ‘guilty pleasure’ is much more than stealing a spoon from a restaurant. This is why we see more videos with titles and skits that makes one think like a pervert.

A bar chart from Statista which shows the increase in rape cases in India from 2005 to 2002.

If we were to randomly check the browsing history of men from all walks of life in India, we would likely find that over 80% of them watch porn videos. The mobile devices and internet connectivity in India has significantly increased the number of people watching porn videos.

I am not claiming that porn videos are the sole reason for the rising number of rapes in India. But why not banning it in India for a year to see if it reduces the numbers? Even if it amounts to moral policing, why not try it to see if it makes a difference? These videos will be available even if all the sites are banned in India, but it won’t be accessible so easily.

A husband who enjoys beating his wife, or a person who enjoys torturing someone, people with a killer instinct and those who commit sexual violence share some underlying traits. These underlying traits can be found in people who enjoy raping women, than having a sexual intercourse with mutual consent.

All the above mentioned traits and the “guilty pleasure” makes someone have the affinity towards enjoying women belonging to other men. This could be one of the major factor that leads to increased number of rapes in India.

There is an increasing tendency In India where people engage in sexual violence due to feud and vengeance. There should be a thorough investigation to find potential conspiracy, and should punish those involved in the conspiracy. Some of the rapes occurring in India are driven by revenge from corrupt political leaders, caste or religious figures, and businessmen.

The government should create a database of every reported rape, with details about the perpetrator such as their education, background, and the circumstances of the incident. This would aid in conducting comprehensive behavioural studies. School curriculums should be designed to instil values and morals that will shape students’ behaviour.
